How Static HTML Websites Compare to WordPress Websites

Published: November 10, 2014

The static HTML (hyper text markup language) website dates back to the earliest days of the Internet. The static label refers to the fact that once built, the website could not be altered or updated without the help of a programmer skilled in HTML. Since each web page on a static HTML site is a separate document, there are no easily-accessible databases or files that would enable an untrained user to make even basic updates or changes. Any desired changes would require the HTML code to be edited on a page by page basis.

Compare that to the dynamic WordPress website, a CML-based (content management system) platform that allows even unskilled beginners (with a little training) to update website content at will. WordPress sites are considered dynamic because of their SQL database, which stores website data, provides for faster page loading, and gives website visitors a better experience. Each web page is generated from this stored information, which can be easily accessed and updated as needed.

Overall User Friendliness
User friendliness is probably the single biggest advantage of a dynamic WordPress site.

WordPress is basically a blogging platform with a powerful CMS (content management system) that can integrate with a number of different programming languages such as MySQL, ASP, and PHP. This enables your site to run on various scripts depending on the required task.

Updating site content and even adding new pages to a WordPress site is much easier than it is with a static HTML site. While there is a bit of a learning curve with WordPress, it’s nothing compared to having to master HTML code.

Website Security
The advantage goes to static HTML sites when it comes to overall website security; it’s simply much harder for a hacker to attack HTML files.

Because WordPress is an extremely popular open-source platform, it is more attractive to hackers seeking to exploit unprotected websites. There are a number of effective WordPress security plugins, many of them free to download and use, such as

  • BulletProof Security, which has an impressive 4.8 out of 5 stars rating from its users and has been downloaded more than 1.1 million times.
  • Acunetix WP Security Scan.
  • Sucuri Securiy Scan.
  • iThemes Security – formerly Better WP Security.
  • Wordfence.
  • All in One WP Security & Firewall.

Available Plugins to Increase Site Functionality
WordPress has literally thousands of both free and paid plugins available to customize your website’s functionality with a one-click install. Options include SEO optimization, security hardening, contact forms, e-commerce, and website analytics. While many of these functionalities could be added to a static HTML site, a skilled programmer would be required to handle the coding.

Search Engine Optimization
WordPress is the hands-down winner when it comes to optimizing your website for the search engines. While it’s possible to optimize a static HTML site for SEO, it’s a time consuming chore that will require knowledge of HTML code.

It’s no accident that WordPress sites tend to outrank their HTML competitors – the WordPress platform was built for blogging, and Google loves to see a steady flow of fresh content. A number of SEO plugins are available to further enhance your WordPress site’s SEO.
